What Is an Ear, Nose and Throat Doctor?
Serving Brownsville, McAllen, & Harlingen, TX
An ear, nose and throat doctor (also known as an ENT or an otolaryngologist) is a physician who specializes in treating the ear, nose, and throat, as well as related areas of the head and neck. Besides providing treatment for conditions like sinusitis, frequent ear infections, and problems with speaking or swallowing, ENTs can also perform surgery around the head and neck.
An ENT is a specialist, meaning that he or she has additional training that goes above and beyond an undergraduate education and four years of medical school. Most otolaryngologists have as many as five years of specialty training. Dr. Turner Wright is board-certified by the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy, which means he has passed rigorous board examinations. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
When Should You See an ENT?
You should see an ENT if you have a problem with your ear, nose or throat region that your primary care provider is unable to fully treat. You might have a need for complex sinusitis treatment, or you could have received an injury to your head or neck. If you and your primary care provider agree that an ENT can help you, you’ll usually get a referral.
Conditions that an otolaryngologist can treat include the following:
- Asthma and allergies
- Balance problems
- Breathing problems
- Cleft palate
- Ear, nose and throat injuries
- Frequent nosebleeds
- Frequent or severe ear infections
- Hearing impairment
- Sore throat
- Swimmer’s ear
- Tonsil/adenoidal infections
- Postnasal drip
- And more
In addition to the above, people who have birth defects in the ear, nose, and throat, as well as those with Down syndrome, should also see an ENT.
